Winona Guy is based in Devon, working across the South West and UK. She works as a performer, choreographer, movement director and arts facilitator across dance, theatre and performance art disciplines. Winona’s core ways of working are through improvisation, interdisciplinary practice, somatics and contemporary dance.
Relationality is at the foundation of Winona’s work, and her interests lie in how movement can help highlight notions and experiences of connectedness, within ourselves, our communities, our environment and our very existence within space and time.
Having grown up in rural Cornwall and returning to the South West in recent years, Winona’s work is strongly influenced by local landscapes and the influence it has on human and non human ecosystems and communities. Her choreographic work is strongly connected to environment, focusing on issues such as climate change, habitats, evolution and societal structures. As a performer, she regularly works outdoors and in non-theatre settings, on works that explore similar themes. As a practitioner and activist she regularly delivers workshops focused on climate change and conservation, through theatre practice and wider settings.
Winona is also passionate about sustainable arts practice and collaboration and has worked with visual artists, filmmakers, musicians and fashion designers. She is one third of HowNow Collective, cofounded with Kyra Norman and Claud Tonietto. HowNow exists to hold a space in Cornwall, for artists working with movement and dance, to gather and share moving and thinking. She was also a co-founding member of Tracing Paces, a dance company that explored the connection between people and place.
Winona is always a huge pleasure to work with. After a number of diverse projects, I’ve found that she can consistently meet any challenge with intelligence, good humour, and a charming performance presence. Her skills in performing across disciplines and contexts is grounded in her great commitment and playful curiosity.
